Cycling around Ruapehu 2008Leisure warming up for the Ruapehu Classic Race. |
Skiing 2010a, morning exercisesIt can sound odd - to do a 5km run in the morning before 6 hours of skiing, but in fact this is a nice warm up exercise. It is as pleasant as helpful to lower risk of injures in the first hours on the slopes. Try it yourself next time. |
Mangawhero river walkMangawhero (Red Stream in Maori) river runs from Turoa ski fields along Mountain road down to Ohakune. Walking along the stream is full of nice sceneries, tempting bathing spots and observations of beautiful mountain flora. Be careful though not to harm fragile alpine vegetation nor yourself (as not everywhere passes are easy) on the way. |
Skiing 2011, Turoa great jump trackIn the past few years, each season we find better and better jump cascades on Turoa ski field, built with great love and dedication. This season 2011, jump tracks on Mother Terrain side were absolutely fabulous! Yeah, challenge! |
Foggy skiingVery helpful to appreciate sauna and hot wine aftewards. ... fortunately no one was injured this day. |
Skiing 2010c, spring timeSpring time of year 2010 is on and around Ruapehu. Rapidly melting snow, slushy trails and teeth or rocks everywhere. On the plus side there is no struggle with the ice and you land safer when jumping. Much of the season snow level was just above 1 meter mark. The weather was no too good either, allowing just few day of full day skiing in some of the months (September for instance) Nevertheless many of skiers/snowboarders managed to do 10 or even 20 good days (for myself it was 9), and still, in the middle of October there were plenty of good rides on the upper mountains. |
WindyAlmost as in R.Sheckley's "A Wind is Rising" story. |
